Everyone has travelled through train once in their lifetime and for sure enjoyed that moment... whether its rainy season or its winter everyone loves travelling through Indian Railways, But anybody knows from where it all started ? If no then No Problem...
Let's go through the history of our Indian Railways !!
The history of Indian Railways is over 169years ago, On 16th April, 1853 first passenger train was operated between Bori Bunder(Bombay) to Thane nad the distance covered was 34km. It was operated by three locomotives named SAHIB, SULTAN and SINDH and had 13 coaches. But before that the first Railway proposal for India was made in the year 1832. LORD DALHOUSIE came to India in 1848 to serve as governor general of India, He introduced Railways in India which was ran between bombay to thane in the year 1853.
Now let's see what Indian Railways is now !!
♦ India has the FOURTH largest railway network with OVER 22,593 operating trains with a daily passenger count of 24MILLION passengers and 203.88MILLION TONNES of freight.
♦ It has total route length of 68,043KM (42,280MI).
♦ Indian Railways has total of 19 ZONES and 70 DIVISIONS
♦ There are 50 RAJDHANI EXPRESS trains which connects our capital NEW DWLHI with different states
♦ These trains connects with states like AHEMDABAD, BANGLORE, BHUBANESWAR, CHENNAI, GUWAHATI, MUMBAI ,PATNA, KOLKATA, HYDRABAD, RANCHI and THIRUVANANTHAPURAM.
♦ IRCTC which stands for INDIAN RAILWAYS CATERING AND TOURISM CORPORATION is a corporation which gives massive services to Indian Railways.
♦ IRCTC is an Indian Railway subsidy and set up by ministry of Railways to manage TOURISM, CATERING and ONLINE TICKETING operations of Indian Railways. Headquater of IRCTC is located in capital of India i.e. NEW DELHI.
♦ Indian Railways have different types of locomotives (Train Engine) like WAP5, WAP7, WAG9, WAG12, WAG7, and many more.
♦ In which WAG12 is the most powerful locomotive in the world with 12,000HP.
♦ Where WAP stands for BROAD GUAGE(W), AC CURRENT(A), PASSENGER TRAFFIC(P) and in WAG the letter G refers to GOODS(G).
♦ There are TWO types of coaches in Indian Railways i.e. LHB and ICF where LHB refers to LINKE-HOFMANN-BUSCH and ICF refers to INTEGRAL COACH FACTORY.
♦ Indian coaches have different types such as FIRST A/C(1A), EXECUTIVE ANUBHUTI(EA), AC EXECUTIVE CLASS(EC), SECOND AC(2A), FIRST CLASS(FC), THIRD AC(3A), THIRD AC ECO(3E), AC CHAIR CAR(CC) and SLEEPER(SL).
